Manali

Manali is where most Indian group trips begin. It sits on the banks of the Beas at about 2,050 metres, is connected to Delhi by an overnight bus, and packs snow, river valleys and a proper cafe culture into a single long weekend. Old Manali stays busy through the season, while Solang and the Atal Tunnel pull the day crowd towards the snow line.

Why groups pick Manali first

Everything worth seeing is close enough to share. One cab covers Solang, Hadimba temple and Old Manali in a day, and the cost splits nicely across eight or ten people. Evenings are the real draw — riverside cafes, bonfires and live music that suit a group far better than a solo trip.

Getting there

The overnight Volvo from Delhi takes 12 to 14 hours and is what most groups book; HRTC and private operators both run nightly. Flying into Bhuntar cuts the road journey to about an hour from Manali, but the airport has very few daily flights and fares climb steeply in peak season.

What to plan around

Solang Valley activities — paragliding, zorbing, ropeway — are seasonal and rates are negotiated on the spot, so agree on a budget as a group before you arrive. The Atal Tunnel to Sissu and Lahaul closes on heavy-snow days, so keep one spare day in the itinerary if Lahaul is on your list. From May to June the tunnel also sees long traffic queues, and leaving before 7 am makes a real difference.

Where to stay

Old Manali guesthouses are the cheapest and closest to the cafes. Hotels along Mall Road are more convenient for families and larger groups, and the Naggar side is quieter with better valley views if the group is not chasing nightlife.
